Privacy Policy

Last updated: August 9, 2026

This policy applies to the mobile application Artex (the “app”), published by Simon Bernard (Self-employed / Micro-entrepreneur).

Our principle is simple: the app has no server, creates no account, and collects no personal data. Your photos and your library stay on your device.

1. No data collection

The app has no server and creates no user account. We do not collect, transmit, or store on any server your identity, email address, usage data, or any personal information.

2. Where your data lives

Everything you enter or the app produces (works, label readings, notes, favorites, tags, visits, museums, settings) is stored only on your device, in the app’s private storage. It never leaves your phone as a result of using the app.

  • Backup: your data may be included in your operating system’s automatic backup (iCloud on iOS, Google Auto Backup on Android). This backup is managed by Apple or Google according to your device settings; we have no access to it.
  • Export: the app lets you export your data as JSON. The resulting file goes wherever you decide.

3. Camera and photos

The app requests access to the camera in order to photograph a museum label or a work. Photos taken in the app are stored locally, in its private storage, and are transmitted to no one.

If you enable the corresponding setting, a photo you take can also be saved to your device’s photo library. The app never reads the contents of your photo library.

4. Reading the label: everything happens on your device

Text recognition on the label and the extraction of its fields (title, artist, date, medium, dimensions, institution, inventory number) run entirely on your device, using technologies provided by the operating system. No image is sent to any server — not to ours, since we have none, and not to any third-party image analysis service.

5. Location (optional)

If you allow it, the app records the position where a work is scanned, so it can be placed on the map in your visit journal. That position is stored only on your device, alongside the work, and is transmitted to no one.

This feature is optional: it can be turned off at any time in the app’s settings or your system’s. The app remains fully usable without it.

6. Online enrichment (optional)

The app can complete a work with public information (art movement, artist biography, historical context, high-definition reproduction) from Wikidata, Wikipedia, and Wikimedia Commons, projects of the Wikimedia Foundation.

  • This is the only feature that uses the network. It can be turned off in the settings; the rest of the app works entirely offline.
  • Those requests contain only the label details needed for the lookup (for example the title and the artist’s name). They contain no photos, no notes, no location, and no identifier of yours.
  • As with any connection to a website, your IP address is technically visible to the server being queried. How the Wikimedia Foundation handles it is governed by its own privacy policy.

7. Sharing and PDF export

When you share a work or its PDF export through your system’s share sheet, the content is sent to the app you choose; that sharing is then governed by that app’s privacy policy.

8. In-app purchases

The app offers a one-time purchase (“Support”) unlocking additional features. These purchases are handled entirely by Apple’s App Store or the Google Play Store. We neither receive nor store any banking or payment data. Processing of that data is governed by Apple’s and Google’s privacy policies.

9. No tracking, no ads

The app contains no analytics, no cookies, no advertising trackers, and no third-party tracking SDKs. We do not share or sell any data, because we collect none.

10. Children

Because the app collects no data, it can be used with no privacy risk, including by minors.

11. Your rights (GDPR)

Under the General Data Protection Regulation, you have rights of access, rectification, and erasure of your personal data. Since we hold no data about you on our systems, these rights are exercised directly from the app: you can at any time view, edit, or delete your data on your device.
